The Cosy Pet Corner: A Space Your Pet Loves That Still Looks Good

Spaniel relaxing in a plush brown dog bed – the cosy pet corner

Every pet deserves a place that's properly theirs. But a pile of mismatched beds, bowls and toys in the middle of the living room isn't anyone's idea of a calm home. The good news is that a pet corner can look as considered as the rest of the room, with a little planning.

Start with the right spot

Dogs and cats like to rest where they can still keep an eye on their people, so a far-off spare room rarely works. Look for a quiet corner of the living room or kitchen, away from the front door and busy walkways. Near a radiator is cosy in winter, but leave a gap so the bed doesn't get too hot.

Treat the bed like furniture

The bed is the centrepiece, so choose it the way you'd choose a chair or a rug. Soft neutrals, natural textures and simple shapes blend into most rooms far better than bright cartoon prints. A removable, washable cover is a must.

Our Cosy Bolster Dog Bed in Charcoal Grey sits neatly against a sofa or wall, and the raised sides give pets something to lean into. For a warmer, earthier look, try the PAW Bed in Khaki Beige.

Give cats a little height and a hideaway

Cats like options: somewhere to watch from and somewhere to disappear into. A covered bed or tunnel near a windowsill or shelf they can reach often becomes their favourite spot in the house.

The Cat Tunnel Bed doubles as a play tunnel and a snug nest, so it earns its floor space.

Make mealtimes tidy

Bowls are the part of a pet corner that most often looks messy. A wipe-clean mat under them catches splashes and stray biscuits, and defines the feeding area so it looks intentional.

Our printed Good Boy feeding mat and Meow Time cat mat add a bit of personality while protecting your floor.

Hide the clutter

Toys, brushes, poo bags and treats have a way of spreading across the room. A lidded basket or box beside the bed keeps everything in one place, and makes the five-minute evening tidy-up much quicker.

Add a personal touch

A framed photo, a name sign or a cushion with a little humour turns the corner into something that feels loved. If you add plants, always check they're pet-safe first; lilies, for example, are highly toxic to cats.

Adjust with the seasons

In winter, move the bed away from draughty doors and windows and add an extra blanket. In summer, a cooler spot out of direct sun will be more comfortable.

A pet corner says something lovely about a home: everyone who lives here belongs here. For more ideas like this, sign up to the Blanket & Paw newsletter at the bottom of the page.
